As part of our ‘Rules for Living’ topic in RE we have started learning about Sikhism. We had a wonderful afternoon at the Gurdwara, the Sikh temple, in Newcastle to find out more about Sikhism.

When we entered we were invited to take off our shoes and to cover our heads as a mark of respect. We were then welcomed into the Langar, the community kitchen, where we were served food and drink. Everyone is welcome here to eat and drink the food prepared, which is all free. Sikhs believe that everyone is equal and treat everyone equally.

We learnt about how Sikhs treat the Guru Granth Sahib, their Holy Book. It is treat the same as a person as they believe that it is their living Guru. We spent quiet and reflective time where the Guru Granth Sahib is kept and were allowed to look at the bedroom where it is kept at night. We had a fantastic time, asked lots of questions and learnt a lot which will help us in our RE lessons.
