Year 4 had a fantastic learning experience working with a range of people on the topic of World War One. They first met Dorothy Hall from the North East Memorials Project who discussed how we can research people from the war. Next we had a visit from That History Bloke who told us about Thomas Young from High Spen who received the Victoria Cross after saving nine soldier’s lives. Miss Whalen and Miss Jenkins led an afternoon lesson about ‘Why we celebrate Remembrance’ and the significance of the poppy. The children made a wreath using their hand prints and each wrote a prayer commemorating the fallen soldiers. On Friday morning we went as a class to lay the wreath at the Remembrance garden and took time to reflect there. After this, the children decorated biscuits with a poppy using icing.
