Year 1 have been very busy this week in preparation for the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One. On Monday we met Dorothy Hall from the North East Memorials Project who discussed and shared images of war memorials which had the names of the men from Gateshead who lost their lives during the war. On Tuesday morning we took part in an assembly with Naomi from the DLI Museum. We found out why WW1 happened and we even got the opportunity to try on some uniform. On Tuesday afternoon we left school and went to Saltwell Park ‘Field of Remembrance’. Each poppy was marked with the name of a fallen soldier and the age at which they lost their life. On Wednesday we made poppies using plastic bottles to create a class wreath. We also learnt about food and rationing before making some scones for our peace party. On Friday we took our poppy wreath up to the Remembrance Garden and said prayers for the fallen soldiers and their families. On the afternoon we had our peace party. We listened to WW1 music, watched Remembrance videos and ate our scones whilst thinking about the importance of peace.
