Yesterday,  Year 6 had a wonderful workshop  with the Durham Light Infantry museum.

They researched soldiers from different battalions within the DLI. They found out where they were born, what job they did before the war, and  what age they were when they joined up, using the census from 1911. Next they researched what countries and battlefields their soldier went to during his army career , using military records and  newspaper archives. Finally they researched what happened to him when he was a soldier answering questions including ‘Did he die ?’ ‘Where was he buried?’ and ‘Did he win any medals?’

After that , the children looked at genuine artefacts from the first world war, including a Storm Troopers helmet  and a compass  which belonged to a British captain.
