As part of our English learning this half term we have been reading ‘The Secret of Black Rock’. Black Rock is feared by fishermen and fisherwomen alike as many boats have been wrecked there until Erin discovers the secret that Black Rock is a living creature home to many hundreds of fish. She persuades the fishermen not to destroy Black Rock and instead they build a lighthouse on top of it to warn ships of the dangerous rocks below. So we decided to visit St Mary’s Lighthouse in Whitley Bay to explore the features of a lighthouse and find out why they are and were so important. It was very interesting to learn about the history of St Mary’s Lighthouse as well as finding out what lighthouse keeper’s lives used to be like. We were even lucky enough to climb up the spiral staircase to the very top of the lighthouse to see the lantern room. Some of us were a little nervous but we overcame our fears and encouraged each other brilliantly!
