Today we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Newcastle Castle as part of our ‘Famous Queens’ history topic. We explored the grounds of the castle including the Gatehouse, dungeons and Castle Keep before climbing to the very top where soldiers would shoot arrows to defend the castle and city of Newcastle. Then we took part in an interesting workshop about the three Queens: Elizabeth I, Victoria and Elizabeth II. We found out about their reigns and looked closely at different artefacts from the three periods of time. Then we took part in a coronation ceremony where one of us was crowned Queen of England! We talked about the symbolism of the orb and sceptre.
